MORGANTOWN -

For some people, donning the old gold and blue at West Virginia University is a dream, but price and distance can make that dream too far out of reach. A new deal with Pierpont Community College is making it more of a reality.

"I'm representing the program," said Doreen Larson, President of Pierpont Community and Technical College. "I've got my Pierpont colors but I've got my WVU kerchief on. We love to say 'Pierponteer' to Mountaineer."

WVU and Pierpont Community and Technical College signed a new articulation agreement on Monday at the Pierpont Center. It outlines what courses students should take in their first two years of college, either online or at Pierpont.

"It will provide the opportunity that so many students are looking for," Larson said. "They can start at Pierpont in the small classes at the low cost and still fulfill their dreams of going forward to West Virginia University."

The BA Pathway is part of a national and statewide collaboration to get more people to complete college. Many who will benefit from the online courses are adult learners.

"One step is to get them to complete their Associates degree and then we recognized that many of the students that completed their associates degree were adult learners and they were tied to their communities," said Sue Day-Perroots, the Associate Vice President for Academic Innovation at WVU. "So they didn't really have a pathway or an opportunity to complete their bachelors degree."

Students can complete an Associate of Liberal Studies degree following a prescribed curriculum at Pierpont. It will then transfer into WVU's B. A. Pathway program.

"This one really is one that regardless of where you live, whether you're working, what your circumstance is, West Virginia University is available to you and it's available online," Larson said. "So students completing at Pierpont online or in classes can go forward into WVU."
