BRIDGEPORT -

United Hospital Center's Cecil B. Highland and Barbara B. Highland Cancer Center offers many programs and services for cancer patients that can make the experience a little easier and now it hopes to add one more program to the center.

"It would provide for a certified music therapist to come into the cancer center and meet with patients or caregivers both as outpatients as well as inpatients. It would be about 10 hours a week of service to the patients," said Linda Carte, Director of Oncology for UHC.

The music therapy program will come from the Livestrong Foundation's "Community Impact Project."

Carte said the Jeffrey Frank Wacks Music Therapy Program will be very beneficial to patients.

"Music has been proven through research to be instrumental in helping with stress and anxiety reduction, it forms a therapeutic release, it can help people heal, and can help with pain reduction as well," Carte said.

Out of nearly 60 hospitals in the running, 39 will be chosen.

You can help UHC win by voting online.

Carte said UHC already has state of the art equipment, but the music therapy program will help with other aspects of the healing process.

"I think everybody knows someone who has been affected by cancer. Whether it be themselves, a family member, a friend, a neighbor, the far reaching affects of cancer are not only physical but emotional and spiritual, and anyway we can help the patients have a better quality of life, to feel more comfortable, and to really heal from the experience we should all be joining hands and trying to accomplish that," said Carte.

You can help UHC win. All you have to do is click here.

After that click the Jeffrey Frank Wacks Music Therapy tab, find United Hospital Center, and click vote. You can also share the page with your friends and family on both Facebook and Twitter to get more votes for UHC.

The contest ends April 11.
