Animal Shelters are in constant need for help from the public and one little girl made it her mission to do just that.

Kate Gribben, 9, decided she wanted something different for her birthday this year. Instead of asking for a bike or a new soccer ball, she asked people to give her towels, cleaning supplies, and other items that the Marion County Humane Society could put to good use.

"Actually she started this idea last year, and she took donations for the Soup Opera," said her dad Joe Gribben. "This year when her birthday came around she decided she wanted to help out the Marion County Humane Society."

Kate said she decided to donate to the humane society because she's an animal lover. In fact, she has six dogs and hopes to add a few more.

"One's name is Rocky, Benny, Jero, Gabby, Lena," said Kate. "I have a cat named Jack, and I might get to adopt one from here to train."

Animal shelter employees said that they go through cleaning supplies quickly. Everything that the Gribbens donated will help them complete their day to day tasks.

"It makes me feel really great because I was the same way when I was little. I always loved animals," said Chele Faulkner, an employee at the Marion County Humane Society. "Getting people started at a young age knowing that they are so dedicated to something like this, it's just a good feeling."

"I think the dogs and cats they need homes," said Kate. "And all that and they need stuff to live."

Kate's father said that he's very proud that his daughter thinks of others on her birthday and that she plans to donate her gifts again next year.

"Of course as a parent it's very heart warming," Joe Gribbens said. "It makes you very, very proud of your daughter when she does things like that."

There are several animals up for adoption at the Humane Society. Call 304-366-5391 to learn more.
