"My Bike" Program Brings Smiles to Children in West Virginia

Posted: Updated:
Isabella Derby, 6, of Morgantown, is proud of her new bike.  For her family this is a miracle.  This bike lets Isabella be a kid.

Isabella's Dad, Dale Derby highlighted his excitement for this bike by saying, "Awesome, it's really amazing.  I'm just really excited, it actually brought me to tears just a little bit ago, when I saw her making her loop around.  It's amazing how this little bike is going to mean so much to her."

This bike allows Isabella to get outdoors and ride alongside her whole family.  It also gives her the chance to build a stronger bond with her sister.

"I've been really excited ever since I heard Isabella was getting a new bike, I'm just excited now she can play with me outside," Isabella's sister Helyana said.

It's not a bike everyone can afford, each bike costs $1,800.  That's why Variety Children's Charity and big name sponsors like Mountaineer Oil are joining together to make this possible.

CEO of Mountaineer Oil said, "My goal is to get all of the oil and gas companies in West Virginia, who are operating in West Virginia, to get on board and sponsor a bike per well."

Variety believes every kid deserves a bike and Senator Joe Manchin is helping to achieve that goal.

"These children are blessed because they do have loving and caring adults out there, that want them to have a normal life, and today makes that dream come true," Senator Manchin said.

Variety's "My Bike" Program provides adaptive bikes to children with disabilities who meet the eligibility guidelines. Variety's "My Bike" Program serves eligible children in West Virginia and Western Pennsylvania.  The non-profit organization hopes to give out 125 bikes in West Virginia by the summer.
