CLARKSBURG -

A centuries old American Indian sport is coming alive in Harrison County.

Youth Lacrosse is gaining more and more popularity throughout the county.

The Harrison County boys and girls middle school team is now competing with well established teams from Wheeling, Charleston and Morgantown.

"Lacrosse is actually an Indian sport that started hundreds of years ago as a competition between tribes and a way to build community and they would actually play for upwards of a week on fields as big as a mile across. So it was pretty intense," said Jeff Strange, Talons Head Coach.

Coach Strange said Collegiate Lacrosse has also increased in popularity, giving kids increased opportunities for athletic scholarships.

Over in Morgantown, Middle schools were also highlighting the sport.

Morgantown Middle School held their Boys Laxapolooza event April 6th, where teams from Charleston, Fairmont, Preston, and Morgantown got together to compete.

Flip Green, Morgantown Middle School Head Coach said it's great to bring the state together to play.
