City of Philippi Continues to Develop Comprehensive Plan for the Future

Posted: Updated:

The city of Philippi hasn't created a comprehensive plan since 1995, but that all changed on Tuesday night, as city officials committed to keep the city growing and make it an even better place for the future.

"The comprehensive plan, the life cycle, is really only meant to be 10 years, at the most. Really, closer to the eight-year mark, we should begin working on it," said Carl Hayden Cottrill, chair of the Philippi Planning Commission.

That's what the Philippi Planning Commission and other community members set out to accomplish, as they held a round-table discussion to discuss a variety of possibilities that community members propose.

"They can say, 'We need big box stores, chain store in Philippi.' They can say, 'We need another grocery store,'" said Cottrill.

Mayor Jerry Mouser said while several projects are in the works, there's still lots to be done.

"One of the main things we need to do in Philippi is to attract new industry and businesses. We are very excited about the expansion they are doing here at A-B University; The Gateway project, which has to do with the old Marathon gas station; Of course, there's the new Sheetz going in, so we do have some things happening, but not enough," said Mouser.

The city plans to mail out surveys next month to hear additional feedback.
