Louis A Johnson VA Medical Center Recognizes Volunteers in Annual Ceremony

Posted: Updated:

The Louis A Johnson VA Medical Center honored its volunteers Friday in its 63rd annual recognition ceremony.

More than 400 volunteers work at the center and put in a combined 60,000 hours of work in 2013.

The volunteers had lunch before the awards were given out for both number of hours volunteered and years of service.

Medical Center Director Beth Brown said these volunteers make the center run smoothly.

"One of the things that the volunteers are able to do for us is things we wouldn't be able to do on a day-to-day basis. We have one volunteer group that comes in on Tuesday's with fresh flowers and makes flower arrangements to put at the bedsides. We also have a group that will come in and read to the veterans," said Brown.

One of the biggest awards went to Dortha Parsons, who has dedicated 22,500 hours to the center.
