CHARLESTON, WV -

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has appointed Richard Snuffer II as the new state executive director for the USDA's West Virginia Farm Service Agency. The Raleigh County native took on the new role April 7.

Snuffer started his career with USDA in 1980 at the county level as a county operations trainee. He became a county executive director and then served as automation coordinator for 20 years. He most recently served as the state outreach and communications coordinator for West Virginia.

During his 34 years of service with USDA, he won a number of honors, including the Administrator's Award for outstanding service to West Virginia counties as automation coordinator.

He graduated magna cum laude from West Virginia University in 1977 with a bachelor's degree in animal science. He earned his master's degree in vocational agriculture from WVU in 1978.

Before joining the USDA, he worked as a vocational agriculture teacher in Fayette County. He also judges livestock shows throughout the tri-state area and is involved in his family's farm.

He's also involved in his community. He has been a member of the Raleigh County Board of Education since 2003, serving as president of the board for the last six years. He has served as president of the West Virginia School Boards Association and the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center's board of directors.
