As part of national donate life month, United Hospital Center is talking about the importance of organ donation and tissue donation.

UHC performs these vital tissue transplants. Juanita Alfred, a critical care educator, said that tissue donation may not be as well known, but is just as important as organ donation.

“When you are donating tissue we're talking about skin, bone, ligaments, and some vessels that aren't used all the time as one piece. Parts of it are used, so one donation can affect up to 50 to 150 people,” Alfred said.

To celebrate Donate Life Month, UHC will team with CORE, the Center for Organ Recovery and Education, and hold a tree planting ceremony.

The ceremony will be Wednesday, April 30 at 2 p.m. at the People's Hospice Memorial Garden near the VA Hospital.

Anyone who has been affected by organ donation is welcome to attend.
