Canaan Valley Resort State Park, one of West Virginia’s most visited winter destinations, soon will be under new management.

A contract to operate the resort near Davis was awarded to U.S. Hotel and Resort Management Inc. April 30, according to Paul Redford, district administrator with the West Virginia State Park system.

The five-year contract will be effective July 1.

The current management contractor, Guest Services Inc., will continue its contact obligations through June 30. It also had operated at Canaan under a concessions contract from 1994 to 2011.

“Both U.S. Hotel and Resort Management Inc., and GSI are professional hospitality and property management companies and they are working together to ensure that visitors to the park continue to receive excellent hospitality during this transition period,” Redford said.

U.S. Hotel and Resort Management’s contract was awarded following a bidding process conducted under the guidelines of the West Virginia Purchasing Division. The contract also includes operation of the restaurant and food services at nearby Blackwater Falls State Park.

U.S. Hotel and Resort Management is a subsidiary of The Ramkota Companies, Inc., and is the general partner of limited partnerships that own hotels or have concession and management agreements involving lodging, food and beverage and related resort activities. It currently operates state parks in Ohio and South Dakota.

There were four bids, including U.S. Hotel and Resort Management Inc., Guest Services, Inc. and Benchmark Resorts and Hotels, the operator of Stonewall Resort and ARAMARK Parks and Destinations.

Canaan Valley boasts that its slopes are among “the highest mountain valley east of the Rocky Mountains, with a base elevation of 3,100 feet.”
