Amy Shuler Goodwin will take the place of Betty Carver as Carver retires from her position as West Virginia Division of Commerce Commissioner.

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin announced Goodwin's appointment to the position of Deputy Secretary of Commerce and the Commissioner of Tourism May 1. Carver announced April 24 she would retire May 31.

"I'm honored and extremely happy to have the opportunity to show the world what we know to be true about the Mountain State — it is and always will be the best place to visit, grow a business and raise a family," Goodwin said.

“Like many, I have been continually impressed by Amy’s energy, talent and passion for improving opportunities for our state,” Tomblin said. “Everyone who knows Amy personally — and professionally— as well as those who will meet her as she travels across our state will immediately recognize why I’m pleased she decided to take on this important role.”

Goodwin first served in the governor’s office as then-Gov. Bob Wise's chief spokesperson. During her 19-year career, Goodwin served as the state director for a presidential campaign and led communications for Charleston.

She is also a former anchor and reporter for WTRF-TV in Wheeling and WCHS-TV in Charleston.

Goodwin was also the managing member of a public relations firm where she worked on behalf of health care organizations, major trade and issue associations, not for profit organizations, universities, Fortune 500 companies, labor unions and small businesses.
