The Department of Environmental Protection has requested additional information from ICG Tygart Valley LLC about a proposed ventilation shaft near Tygart Lake State Park in Grafton.

The company, a subsidiary of Arch Coal, is considering alternate locations for the Leer Mine air shaft after residents and park visitors voiced their concerns about the original site.  Residents express concerns about noise and methane that would disrupt the park and the surrounding area.

The DEP asked ICG to provide details about minimizing noise that would be created by the large fan used at the site.  ICG also consented to resubmit its original permit modification request as alternate locations are considered.  The DEP and ICG agree that the public should be kept informed about major developments and should have ample opportunity to provide input, said the DEP in a news release.

The DEP said it will review all application documents and will take into account comments from the public before deciding whether to approve construction of the shaft.
