CHARLESTON, WV -
In the nearly 30 years of the West Virginia Lottery, there has never been a year like this. Five months into the year and the state has already doubled the amount of million dollar winners they had last year. In fact, this year already, the state has had their most million dollar winners.
"We've had a remarkable run for this to be only the fifth month of the year. We've already had 10 million dollar tickets sold in the state," said Randy Burnside, Public Relations Manager with West Virginia Lottery.
Dating back to 1986, the previous high for million dollar winners was just five. So,why the luck? Well, Burnside says a change in the game could be one of the reasons.
"They made the jackpot where it grows faster, but they also made the Match 5 a million dollars, which increased people winning a million dollars, said Burnside.
Obviously, gambling is a game a chance, but if you're looking for a trend, eight of the winners have won by playing the Powerball. The other two won playing the Mega Millions.
Despite all the good fortune this year, the state hasn't produced a jackpot winner since 2010. All of the revenue produced by the West Virginia Lottery goes to education, senior programs, and tourism.
