Our House Youth Ministries Competing For $25,000 State Farm Neighborhood Assist Grant

PARSONS - Our House Youth Ministries has been working to establish a youth center in Tucker County.

Its launching an effort to spread the word, but it is needing your help.

City and county representatives in Tucker County rallied support on Wednesday for Our House Youth Ministries. For director Liz Lancaster, she sees a very strong desire for a youth center in the county.

"Many others have tried, and it has not been successful. So initially there was skepticism the project, but the call was there and I continued to pursue it," said Liz Lancaster, director.

Our House is one of 200 projects chosen from 4,000 entries across the United States and Canada to compete in a Facebook voting contest for $25,000 from the State Farm Neighborhood Assist Grant Program. The top 40 projects will get the grants. Lancaster said she wasn't expecting it. So immediately the campaign began.

"Our House has been in the top 40. The top 40 receive $25,000. In the past few days, we've been ranked up at number 17," Lancaster said.

The grant will help the project provide programs for local kids ages 14 to 19 regardless of their religious beliefs. Our house will be designed with input from local teens, Our House board of directors and Tucker County High School. If the organization receives the grant, they will use the money for renovations such as adding a kitchen and restroom facilities.

"We're not hear to preach at kids, that's not our goal. Our goal is to develop programs that can help them with what they need, to give them a safe place to hang out," Lancaster said.

Parsons Mayor Dorothy Judy said she appreciates the help Our House could get.

"This definitely is going to be a win-win for the youth, and I'm thrilled to pieces that we're doing as good in the county, and there standing behind it," said Judy.

"It's only about the teenagers in Tucker County, and the surrounding area and this is a model project. If this project goes well, then we have to branch out in other communities," Lancaster said.

Voting began on April 28, but you still have until May 17.
