West Virginia Wesleyan Softball Completes Comeback, Advances to Super Regional

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -

West Virginia Wesleyan needed to sweep Shippensburg on Sunday to advance to the Atlantic "Super Regional" Championship next week, and the Bobcats did just that picking up wins of 9-3 and 6-1 over the homestanding Raiders.WVWC (44-13) advances to take on West Chester next week. The winner of the best-of-three series will advance to the NCAA Championships held in Salem, Va.

The Bobcats jumped out to an early lead in game one with two runs in the top of the first. Shippensburg tied the game up in the second, but WVWC wasted no time getting the lead back in the top of the next inning when Jessica Rodriguez belted a two-run double to left field.

The Raiders got one back in the bottom half of the inning, but West Virginia Wesleyan closed strong scoring two in the sixth and two more in the seventh to claim the 9-3 win.

Alex Furr was 4-for-5 at the top of the order, and Jacqui Omichinski added two hits and scored twice for the Bobcats. Omichinski came on in relief of starter Jessica Griffin in the third inning and finished the game allowing just one hit in the final five innings to earn the win.

WVWC played from in front in the second game as well scoring first in the second inning on a solo shot from Rodriguez. Omichinski, the Mountain East Conference Player of the Year, added a three-run homer in the bottom of the third to push WVWC's lead to 4-0.

The Raiders finally broke through against Omichinski in the fourth as Maddie Justice hit a solo home run, but Ship could get no closer as the Bobcats added two more in the sixth for good measure.

Omichinski went 2-for-3 at the plate and picked up the complete game victory in the circle for West Virginia Wesleyan.
