BOE and County Commission Primary Elections Heat Up in Preston County

Posted: Updated:

Primary Election coverage in Preston County focused on two races. One for a County Commission seat that is up for grabs and three positions available on the Board of Education.

The BOE race had an interesting twist. Three candidates were from the second magisterial district, but only two of those could be elected. So write-ins, Jack Keim and David Friend, from the first and third magisterial district will play a big part.

"The proper procedure for the write-ins are to tally those during canvas," said Linda Huggins, the Preston County Clerk. "Election night we get a grand total of write-ins but we do not have those separated as to who had what votes., Canvas is when we determine who that third person would be."

We'll officially have the third BOE member after canvassing on May 19.

Mac McCrum is a re-elect for the BOE and has high hopes for the newcomer Crissy Estep.

"Crissy's going to be a good board member," McCrum said. "Just to listen to her for a few minutes she has some good ideas and she is a college professor."

The race for County Commissioner will be interesting in November. Democrat Incumbent Vicki Cole will go up against Don "Smitty" Smith who had an impressive turnout in the primary elections.
