CLARKSBURG -

St. Mary's Catholic Grade School in Clarksburg held a West Virginia tailgate for fourth graders on Wednesday.

All of the students each made a t-shirt, flag, and hat representing one of the state's 55 counties.

The 24 students presented their work to family members and teachers, and then enjoyed some tailgate food.

Teacher Steve Pasquariello said the project allows students to learn more about their home state.

“It's a feeling of being a part of West Virginia, they learn a lot about West Virginia. We talk about the sites and places and historical aspects of the state. They get to find out personally how it is through their research,” explained Pasquariello.

The event has been a tradition for the fourth grade class for the past eight years.

State Senator Sam Cann was also there to present a state flag to the school, which Pasquariello said was necessary.
