BRIDGEPORT -

According to the Alzheimer’s Association every 67 seconds someone in the United States develops Alzheimer's, and there are more than 5 million Americans living with the disease.

Caregiver University by the Alzheimer's Association of West Virginia is designed to help those who care for the people with this complex disease.

"Alzheimer's and dementia are really complex diseases, and present a lot of complex problems for the families to navigate,” said Laurel Kirksey, Executive Director of the Alzheimer’s Association of West Virginia.

That’s exactly why the Alzheimer's Association of West Virginia hosts Caregiver University at locations across the state.

"The more you learn about Alzheimer's and Dementia the more you know what to plan for, how to plan, the easier your care giving journey,” explained Kirksey.

The mini-conference was held at Steptoe and Johnson in Bridgeport on Friday, and featured different courses including safety and preparedness and a legal seminar.

"We have a legal and financial seminar that helps families navigate the really complex legal issues around care giving including when someone loses their capacity to make decisions for themselves,” Kirksey explained.

Kirksey said the conference also lets caregivers know they are not alone.

Jackie Scott has cared for her husband since 2009, she said the conference was very helpful, especially the legal seminar.

"I've enjoyed the legal part of it, with the guardianship, the conservator part, and just all the aspects that a caregiver has to think about because you don't have your loved one to help you make decisions that are important for this change of life experience. It gets quite complicated and it is hard for the care givers and family members,” said Scott.

There will be a Caregiver University clinic in Bluefield next.
