Highland Hospital Hosts Grand Opening Gala in Clarksburg

Posted: Updated:
Highland-Clarksburg Hospital opened its doors to the public last summer, and Saturday night was all about celebrating that commitment to help people overcome mental illness by hosting a grand opening gala.

"One out of four people individuals will suffer from mental illness within their lifetime. A lot of people are just too afraid, or just too ashamed, to talk about it," said Chad Sigmon, a featured speaker at the event.

For Highland Hospital officials, helping the public overcome overcome obstacles isn't anything new - they held a ribbon cutting last August.

"The United Hospital Center had donated the building to us, and now, we are able to provide the highest quality of mental health services. We've actually served over 400 children in our facility, and it hasn't even been a year yet, so the need is there," said Shannon Putnam, director of marketing at Highland-Clarksburg Hospital.

That need also applies to veterans and the battles they face after returning home.

"This is a great opportunity for us to build a bridge between the V-A and Highland Hospital staff so we can really help to get veterans another opportunity, another resource to get the assistance they need," said Jamie Summerlin of Operation Welcome Home.

Sigmon has been on a similar "journey" to Summerlin's. He ran across the country to spread awareness for mental health.

"While I was there, I met so many different people that needed someone to talk to. I, myself, suffer from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder for most of my life, which can lead to clinical depression, so I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and let others know that they're not alone," said Sigmon.
