Business Is Blooming for Area Greenhouses This Season

SHINNSTON -

It’s that time of year when the flowers are blooming, the sun is shining, and the temperatures are getting warmer.

After a long, cold winter, it seems everyone is ready for summer.

That means business for local greenhouses.

"Planting flowers is a happy time for them, or putting their garden in is a happy time for them. It's summer so they're ready to get that going,” explained David Freed, owner of Freed’s Greenhouse in Shinnston.

Freed said this is one of the busiest times of year for his business.

With a wide selection he said people make long trips to come to his greenhouse.

"We've had people in from Glenville, Summersville, Charleston and Pittsburgh. I just had a guy in from over in Maryland, because he said they can't get what we have here,” Freed said.

Freed said his selection of flowers is wide, but it's his vegetables that bring people in from far and near.

"We've always had a good line of tomatoes and peppers. We have like 100 different tomatoes right now and probably around 70 different peppers, including the ghost,” explained Freed.

Freed's isn't the only business blooming, Tom Davis’ Garden Center is also seeing large numbers of customers this time of year.

"Between Mother's Day and the Fourth of July we sell a lot of coconut baskets, and regular baskets. We have Proven Winners, that's a good seller, impatiens, petunias, million bells, and verbena,” said Betty Morris, an employee that’s been with Tom Davis’ for the past 13 years.

Both businesses also have trees, plants, and more.
