Create Buckhannon and the Upshur Parrish House have partnered together in creating a community garden.

The community garden has a total of 38 boxes ranging from a wide variety of vegetables.

The community garden was built in March and finished in April. Organizers said community gardens are becoming popular throughout the state. It hopes to obtain grant money to improve and expand on it.

Organizers said building the community garden creates awareness in what the parrish house does for the community.

"The gardeners we have may have never done anything for the parrish house in the past. So it builds awareness that's there, a need there, and our gardeners are working as a community to provide for those folks," said Buck Edwards, of Create Buckhannon.

Approximately 80 to 100 families will benefit from the parrish house's food pantry per week this summer through the use of the community garden. Two churches and three 4-H groups are also helping out with the garden.
