Wheeling Chili Cook-Off Organizers Hope to Beat Last Year's Record of $80,000 Raised for United Way

WHEELING - Things are getting ready to heat up down at Heritage Port on Saturday for the 14th annual Wheeling Feeling Chili Cook-Off.

Chili cooks from Connecticut to Florida, including some local chili experts are preparing for the event, which includes food, live music, a car cruise, and lots of chili to sample.

Every penny raised at the event goes to the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley. Last year, they raised just over $80,000 and as always, organizers are looking to break that record. Some new categories have also been added to the event this year.

Event Chairwoman Rosemary Humway-Warmuth said, "The homestyle category - which is a new category for us, actually allows the bean or pasta, very different for our international chile society folks who cook a traditional Texas red or Texas verde, (green) with no beans. We have a salsa contest, and commercial and restaurant division added as well."

If you think you have what it takes to enter the contest, there is still time. Humway-Warmuth said they have people enter as late as the morning of the event, but the sooner you register, the better.
