Restaurant Road Trip: Boggs Pizza and Grill

MIDDLEBOURNE -

What’s better at a restaurant than large portions, for a great price?

You’ll find just that at Boggs Pizza and Grill in Middlebourne where the portions are huge, and the feeling of family is even bigger.

"We're a family owned business, and very family oriented and I think this brings in a lot of people. This is a very family-like community and that brings everyone in,” explained Betsy Boggs, co-owner.

Michael Maxwell, a self-proclaimed regular, agrees that the family atmosphere is the best part.

"The food is fantastic, and the Boggs family and staff are just wonderful people. Every time I leave here it feels like the weight of the world has been lifted off my shoulders because of the environment,” Maxwell said.

Maxwell explained that he goes to Boggs every day and will even wait outside until it opens.

Boggs  Pizza and Grill was opened in Middlebourne five years ago by Kim, Rodney, Betsy and Matt Boggs.

Rodney and Kim are married, Matt is their son, and Betsy is his wife.

It was Matt’s idea to start the restaurant with his family.

The restaurant features burgers, salads, sandwiches, calzones, and much more.

Boggs also has specialty pizzas including "the Spud."

"It has buttered crust, mashed potatoes, provolone cheese, cheddar, bacon and onion,” explained Kim Boggs.

The crust of all the pizzas is cooked before the toppings go on, and then again after that to give it a very crisp crust.

Everything on the menu is larger than life, including a special menu item that brings customers in from far and wide.

The calzone challenge features a calzone made from two pounds of dough, and any toppings the customer wants. When the calzone is cooked it weighs about three pounds, and the customer has one hour to eat it.

"People come from hours away just to try the calzone challenge. If they do they get a free t-shirt that says 'I ate a whole calzone can you?” said Betsy Boggs.

The Boggs said only a small number of people have completed the challenge, but many people attempt it.

They said even if it’s not finished customers will take the rest home and eat it reheated a few times.

Even though the calzone stands out, customers said everything on the menu is great.

You can find Boggs Pizza and Grill on Main Street in Middlebourne in Tyler County.

It’s open Monday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
