Dozens of electric vehicle enthusiasts will roar into the Eastern Panhandle June 7 for a “sociability run” commemorating the 100th anniversary of the original EV rally.

The gathering in downtown Charles Town – where American Public University System’s solar array provides 14 charging stations – is about 65 miles northwest of where the 1914 Sociability Run took place in Washington, D.C.

After a rally at APUS which is set to include proclamations from Charles Town Mayor Peggy Smith and Mayor David Hamill of Ranson original site, the plug-in drivers will explore country roads in the Eastern Panhandle and nearby Maryland.

Said Lanny Hartmann, one of the event's organizers, said it makes sense to hold the event in West Virginia rather than in D.C.

“One of the goals of the organizers of the early sociability runs was to prove the ‘country-running ability’ of electrics to both prospective buyers and even to those who already had them,” he said.

A century ago, promoters of electric cars included both Henry Ford and Thomas Edison.
