Stonewall Jackson State Park To Debut New Summer Camp

Posted: Updated:

While Stonewall Resort works to keep itself green, the Stonewall State Park Foundation is taking the opportunity to spread its message of education, conservation and recreation to kids around the state with a new camp this summer.

"This is the first year for Nature Odyssey. It's something we've been talking about for a while here at Stonewall, and we've had some interested parties approach us about actually launching the program so we are running with it," said Stonewall Resort representative Samantha Norris.

The program will be held at the Roanoke Activity Plaza near the resort's entrance, and will include lessons on a wide range of topics from water resources to hiking to wildlife and their habitats around the state. Kids will get the chance to learn about those topics firsthand.

"We will cover all four of those bases with a lot of hands-on activities that a child might not otherwise have time for in a classroom setting during the school year," said Norris.

Norris said the program has been well-received and supported by the community. Professionals and teachers from around the area will be there to share the knowledge they use daily with the kids,so they see how important that knowledge is.

"We have an awesome staff from the field where these topics are taking place in real life. So we have volunteers from GAI Consultants, from Access Midstream, and also from the local school system. We have some educators who are participating in this camp either as an instructor or as a volunteer," Norris said.

For more information about the program or to sign up, go to the resort's website, or contact Norris at (304) 269-8820.
