Taste of Morgantown Helps to Spread Awareness About Donating Blood

Posted: Updated:
The local chapter of the American Red Cross hosted one of its biggest fundraisers of the year Wednesday night. Hundreds of patrons came out for the 6th annual "Taste of Morgantown," to sample local delicacies and help spread awareness.

"My husband was diagnosed with olfactory neuroblastoma in July 2013. He received his first blood transfusion in March 2014," said Jennifer Dalton.

The blood donations bought Jennifer and her two children the gift of time, extending the life of her husband - Sergeant Christopher Dalton of the Morgantown Police Department.

"The cancer ended up taking his life on May 17, 2014," said Jennifer.

But Dalton's memory lives on, thanks to events like the "Taste of Morgantown," which spreads awareness about how to some, blood donations can mean the difference between life and death.

"We couldn't do it without the support of the community and financial contributions from the community. It's a great opportunity for the restaurants to showcase what they do," said Shauna Soom, executive director of the River Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross.

And those chefs sure did show off their most delicious creations, including those from the Cupcakerie. Co-owner Anna Carrier says this is the third year she has come out for the event.

"We've got a lot of really good restaurants going right now, so to be a part of that group is very special for us," said Carrier.

A group that set out to help the Red Cross exceed last year's fundraising total of $23,000, and with that help, the Red Cross continues to plan for the future to make each donation count.

"Some of Sergeant Dalton's colleagues reached out to us and wanted to hold a blood drive," said Soom.

That blood drive will be held on Thursday, July 3 at the West Virginia University Recreation Complex from noon to 6 p.m.

Prospective donors are asked to email Police Detective Mike Charlton at mcharlton@cityofmorgantown.org for details. Advance registration will assist the Red Cross in organizing the event.
