Update: Harrison County Commission Hears Request for Salem Annexation

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE 8/28/14:

Harrison County Commission held a public hearing on Thursday to address the city of Salem's possible annexation of property.

The city wants to annex property it already owns, but is presently outside of city limits.

Members of the public spoke both for and against the annexation, but commission did not make a decision yet.

Commissioner Ron Watson said a decision will most likely be made at the next meeting on September 11.

Harrison County Commission approved an item on Thursday, after it was tabled since last March.

Commission approved minor boundary adjustments for the city of Salem, which will help Salem annex in property it owns but is outside city limits.

Commission is going to work with Salem to annex these properties which they said will help promote future development.

Harrison County Commission met today and heard a request from the city of Salem.

Representatives from the city were there to request the approval of a land annexation.

Salem Mayor Bobby Samples says the property is owned by the city and includes both Upper and Lower Dog Run.

He said the city wants to annex the property into the city limits, for a number of reasons.

Sample said “Of course police protection in that area of property we already own, also for future development be it housing, also for recreation, and we intend to put a new water tank on city property in the future.”

Commission voted to table the item until next week but Samples said the decision of Salem's council was met with approval from the residents.
