Attorney General Patrick Morrisey has announced a settlement with a debt settlement company that includes restitution of $50,000 to consumers.

The settlement announced Tuesday involves an Illinois company, Legal Helpers Debt Resolution. The settlement stipulates that Legal Helpers will pay the state $135,000 and halt any future debt negotiating in West Virginia.

According to Morrisey, at least 400 West Virginians paid Legal Helpers a fee to help them get out of debt. But he says the company provided little assistance in return.

Despite the settlement, the company and its principal owners denied any wrongdoing.
