CLARKSBURG -

The United Way dedicated almost a whole year to raising money to reach its fundraising goal.

Usually other organizations give to the United Way, but on Thursday, the United Way was doing the giving.

Volunteers went to different United Way Agencies like Health Access, Literacy Volunteers, and CASA to complete improvement projects that the organizations wouldn't generally be able to do alone.

"All the United Way Agencies operate on a shoestring budget and a lot of things they can't afford to do or don't have time to do just because they're short staffed. This gives them an opportunity to get things done that they otherwise wouldn't have time to work on themselves,” explained James Swiger, 2015 campaign chair.

That work included landscaping, cleaning, painting, and maintenance work.

It wasn't just United Way Agency members doing the work, there were also volunteers from the public, and corporations like including Dominion, that spent time at the Harrison County YMCA.

"Dominion has donated a lot of money, we bought supplies, and now we have about 30 volunteers here who are just doing a wonderful amount of projects. Fixing things here, cleaning here, just trying to get it spruced back up,” Mary Beth Stanton said.

Dominion had employees from all over the area, including some from Parkersburg, who used the day to make some needed improvements.

"We have allowed some of our employees to take the day and do something different from what they normally do. We get more work done in a day's time than the non-profits can do in a month, and the non-profits really appreciate it as well,” said Bob Orndorff, with Dominion.

Swiger said United Way’s Day of Action is beneficial for everyone.

"This is the largest turnout ever of volunteers this year so that's exciting news. It creates community pride and it's a win-win for everybody,” said Swiger.
