It's opening night for the Bluefield Blue Jays, but this year is the start of something new for Blue Jay fans.

Bowen Field will be selling beer for the very first time this season.

For some of our minor league teams here in Southern West Virginia, alcohol is usually not part of the atmosphere.

The Bluefield Blue Jays are hoping to amp up their fan-friendly environment after 70 years of dry baseball games.

While many people in Mercer County are opposed to the change, there are plenty of fans that say they don't mind at all.

"It's their right. As long as the kids aren't getting it, it's alright with me," said Bluefield resident Jason Keathley.

There will be strict rules at every Blue Jays game. You can't enter the beer garden to purchase alcohol unless you are 21 years old and have on a special wristband.  Some people in the community said they think the beer will take away from the family atmosphere, but one person we spoke with said there's dozens of kid-friendly places that serve alcohol.

"For instance if I'm at Macadoo's, and someone is in the booth next to me they can have a drink... they pay for it, it's their choice," said Bluefield resident Emerald Dowell.

Those 21 and older have the choice to drink in the beer garden or in specially marked sections of the stands.
