Lewis County Looking For Ways To Lower Jail Bill

Posted: Updated:

While crime might be down thanks to aggressive efforts in Lewis County, the bills are still going up.

Last month's regional jail bill in Lewis County set another record: more than $90,000 for May alone.

A new community corrections program in the county is helping to bring that number down, but county officials are looking for other ways.

Some officials think adding a new judge to the Lewis and Upshur circuit will help lower that bill.

"Our circuit was one of the two top circuits in the state in terms of case load. That study will be ready in the next two months, and I believe the legislature will look at redistricting the circuits next year," said Lewis County Delegate Peggy Donaldson Smith.

Smith said another possibility is to split the circuit in two, allowing one judge to focus solely on Lewis County.
