Civil Air Patrol Holding Cadet Summer Encampment

KINGWOOD -

More than 100 cadets are in Preston County for the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Summer Encampment.

It's being held at the West Virginia Army National Guard Training Facility at Camp Dawson, near Kingwood, and hosted by the West Virginia Wing of Civil Air Patrol. CAP is a volunteer auxiliary of the United States Air Force.

The week long encampment exposes cadets to staying on a military base and learning more about the CAP organization.

Cadets on Tuesday were taking orientation flights in a Blackhawk helicopter flown by the state's Army National Guard. One of the pilots flying the cadets was a former CAP cadet. He feels like he's come full circle.

"It was neat to be able to come full circle in being a cadet, to being able to participate in activities as a cadet," said CWO2 Everett Mitchell, helicopter pilot with the WV Air National Guard.

"As a cadet, I wanted to continue coming here. Participating in helicopter rides, repell tower, then as a leader now just seeing the cadet's faces doing things like this that no people their age are getting to do.

Cadets also heard from a speaker about wildlife.

The encampment will continue until Saturday. Ending with pass and review ceremony followed by graduation.
