West Virginia University’s MBA programs are among the best in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report. School leaders credit a commitment to excellence as well as top-notch learning experiences and diversity.

This spring, the College of Business and Economics’ 14-month accelerated Full-Time MBA program was ranked No. 92 in the country in the 2015 Best Graduate Schools guide. That’s up 12 spots from last year. Two months before that, U.S. News ranked the online Executive MBA program No. 23 in the 2014 Best Online Programs Rankings.

“The Full-Time MBA program is something we’ve been carefully working on with respect to raising the quality of our students and raising the quality of the opportunities we provide them,” said Director of Masters Programs Elizabeth Vitullo.

“The college has put a great deal of resources into bringing in highly academically qualified students,” Vitullo said.

She said the school offers a professional practicum all about helping prepare the student for life after the MBA program. Students get help writing resumes and cover letters, preparing for interviews and networking.

“We bring in top executives from various industries who have some connection to WVU and they provide the students with advice and guidance,” she said. “They connect with that expert and that professional in that industry and we hope there’s a great deal of follow-up.”

In addition, Vitullo said Steve Cutright, director of the BrickStreet Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the college, is working to enhance experiential learning in the MBA programs. Students can apply to work on a real business or marketing plan or feasibility study for a company or organization.

For example, a group is working with UGG Australia, well-known maker of sheepskin boots, to find new distribution channels for the company and studying how college campuses might be one of those.

The full-time program also requires a two-week trip to Germany or China, visiting companies and making international contacts.
