WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., recently was honored by Marshall University at the school’s annual State of the University event at the Newseum.

Marshall President Stephen Kopp thanked the New York-born Rockefeller, who is retiring when his Senate term ends in January, “for 50 years of dedicated service to the state that he chose to serve and make his home.”

Rockefeller has supported many Marshall programs in the medical, science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields, including his work to protect and secure funding for the Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research and National Institutes of Health’s Institutional Development Award Program. He has also used his position as chairman of Commerce, Science and Transportation to increase recognition for Marshall’s Institute of Advanced Flexible Manufacturing, forensic science program and Rahall Transportation Institute. “Marshall has provided thousands of West Virginians with a diverse and vibrant education for more than 175 years. MU is an essential part of our state’s excellent higher education system and its economic future,” Rockefeller said.
