WV Treasurer’s Office reaches $5 million in e-claims program

A state program to allow people to file electronic claims for their unclaimed property has paid a little more than $5 million to rightful owners since it started.

The West Virginia State Treasurer’s Office e-claims program has reached $5 million in returned unclaimed property and about 14,000 claims since its 2009 inception, according to a news release.

According to a news release from the State Treasurer’s Office, the e-claims program is “especially helpful with straightforward, one-owner cases.”

“It just sort of happened,” said Senior Claims Specialist Tricia Sullivan. “We do promote e-claims a lot.”

In the most recent fiscal year, which ended June 30, the Unclaimed Property Division processed 7,700 total claims — about 2,800 of which were generated electronically.

“It does make it easier as far as freeing up (physical) space,” Sullivan said.
