Tygart Lake State Park Recovering After Tuesday's Severe Storms

Posted: Updated:
Tygart Lake State Park is still recovering from Tuesday's storm, as officials literally picked up the pieces across the park.

"We were out on the park yesterday, and the wind picked up speed across the lake, and it hit us really hard. So we've had a lot of activity here in the past 24 hours," said park superintendent Jim Browning.

Activity that included heavy rain and severe winds - instead of the normal fishing, boating, and camping at Tygart Lake.

"We have a lot of trees down, power lines down, and some property damage. Unfortunately, a motorcycle hit a deer, a tree fell and ran the deer out onto the road in front of the motorcycle, and those folks were hurt," said Browning.

As of Wednesday, the majority of the state park remained closed, as it is completely without power. That includes the lodge, restrooms, cabins, and campgrounds.

"We have the road blocked near our picnic area #2, we do have extensive power lines that are down in that area, and a pole that has been snapped," said Browning.

The marina and boat ramps remain open, but that doesn't mean they was spared from the storm.

"My understanding is the winds came across the lake and possibly flipped a dock over. The crews are working very hard to clear the roads and are beginning to pick up the debris," said Browning.

As for weekend reservations, Park Superintendent Jim Browning says call before you make the trip.

"We'd ask folks to check with our front desk when our power comes back on for arrangements about their reservation," said Browning.

Browning said the park hopes to have its power restored by the weekend.
