Local Church Fixes Up Houses for Morgantown Residents in Need

Posted: Updated:
Jack Taylor’s home was built in 1885 and he has lived there with his family since 1993. Due to some health issues, he hasn’t been able to keep up with the up keep of his home, but thanks to the Morgantown Makeover Program, his home is going to be looking as good as new by the end of the week.

“I mean you didn’t see it before, it was all peeling and bare. It really needed done and I couldn’t afford to hire it out," says Taylor. "I didn’t know what I was going to do. These people were god sent. They seriously were.”

This is the second year the Morgantown Church of Christ held their Morgantown Makeover Program, and they are hoping to make it an annual event.

They are fixing up three houses in the community over a five day span. They work from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

“Code enforcement actually passes out applications for us if they see a home that could maybe could use a little TLC," says Morgantown Church of Christ Minister, Matt Lowe. "They give out the application that the people fill out and send it into the church. We try to sign up for things we can do and do well.”

Not only do they paint the homes, they do some small repairs and yard work as well. In Taylor’s case, they even fixed his roof and put a fresh coat of paint on it.

“It makes me feel very proud of it. It’s a nice place. I always enjoyed living here. It was a shame what was going on with it," says Taylor looking at his almost finished home.

Minister Lowe said the programs main goal is to change the face of Morgantown, one home at a time.

They will finish up with the five houses this Friday, July 18.

The Morgantown Church of Christ will be accepting applications for next years Morgantown Makeover.
