INSTITUTE, WV -

A long-time West Virginia State University associate professor and former Yellow Jacket football coach has been inducted into his high school's sports hall of fame.

At a ceremony this summer in Newton, Mississippi, Oree Banks was honored by Newton Vocational/N.H. Pilate High School, where he graduated in 1951.

Banks went on to play college football at Kansas State University.

“To be honored by my first educational institution gave me quite a feeling of accomplishment,” Banks said.

Banks, an associate professor of health and human performance at WVSU, began his coaching career at Coahoma Community College in Mississippi where he served as an instructor, head football coach and athletic director starting in 1960.

In 1963, he joined the coaching staff of legendary Coach Eddie Robinson at Grambling State University and later was named head coach at South Carolina State. He coached there for eight years before serving as an assistant coach at the University of South Carolina, the University of Virginia and the University of Wisconsin. He was named head football coach at WVSU in 1977 and served through 1983.

Banks earned a spot in the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1995 and in the WVSU “W” Club Sports Hall of Fame in 2008. He's also a member of the Coahoma Community College Hall of Fame as well as the state of Mississippi Community College Foundation Sports Hall of Fame.
