Buckhannon Fire Department Looking At Purchasing New Ladder Truck

Buckhannon City Council approved at Thursday’s meeting a request for the city’s fire department to move forward in buying a new ladder fire truck.

The department has had its current ladder truck in use for more than 10 years.

The fire department is getting a 2007 model.

The cost for the fire truck is around $433,000.

The city of Buckhannon and the Buckhannon Fire Department will share in the cost.

Chief Mitch Tacy said the current ladder truck will be put up for sale.

The Buckhannon Fire Department has had their ladder truck for more than 10 years. Now the department is looking to make an upgrade.

“We’ve been trying for grants for the last three or four years unsuccessfully. It’s a vital piece of equipment to us but it’s a 1986 model. We stumbled across a 2000 model ladder truck that only has 1,500 hours on it,” said Chief Mitch Tacy.

Tacy said the truck is in almost new condition, and the price around $433,000. In today’s market value, Tacy said the vehicle they’re looking at would be more than $600,000, and a newer model would cost more than $1 million. Tacy said the department couldn’t pass up deal like this.

“To find a deal like this at this kind of price and this kind of condition. It’s a win-win situation. It’s kind of a no brainer for the situation we’re in. It’s going to help the Buckhannon Fire Department for years to come with our purchasing. This will be a big big cost savings, we’re saving about $800,000,” Tacy said.

The fire department and city of Buckhannon are willing to do a cost share project where both sides come up with their share of the funding. Tacy said having a new piece of equipment will help the department in other areas.

“This will have a huge impact and help us maintain our ISO rating at our next evaluation, may even allow us to go to a lower insurance rating,” Tacy said.

If Buckhannon City Council approves the measure during Thursday’s City Council meeting. It will allow the department to go ahead and make the purchase of the new fire truck. The department should have the truck in service within the next few weeks.
