A Morgantown man was arrested after a fight at a Monongalia County bar Sunday night.
Thomas McClurg allegedly got into a fight with another man inside the National Inn Bar on River Road and continued to fight him outside of the bar.
When Monongalia County sheriff’s deputies arrived on scene, they found Gary Straight, Jr. with a large laceration on his head, which appeared to be caused by a beer bottle they found on the ground, deputies said.
Deputies said Straight’s head was swollen, and it appeared as if his jaw and eye socket were broken.
After Straight left in an ambulance, deputies went to find McClurg, who had left the bar. Deputies found him at his home, where McClurg told deputies he got into a fight with Straight but only hit him one time, knocking him to the ground.
Deputies told McClurg it would be impossible to cause such extensive damage to Straight with just one blow, but he insisted that was the case, deputies said.
Deputies also said McClurg had bloodshot and glassy eyes, had the odor of alcohol on his breath, was unsteady on his feet and was slurring his words. After taking and failing one standardized field sobriety test, McClurg denied the other two. Deputies charged him with DUI because he drove his vehicle home from the bar.
McClurg is charged with felony malicious assault and DUI.
