The miners of the Sago Mine disaster were honored with a memorial stone in Philippi.
Senators Joe Manchin and Shelley Moore Capito, and other city and state officials spoke at the event.
West Virginia Secretary of State Natalie Tennant, who was the event speaker, said the event showcased the strength of West Virginians.
“I think it’s part of who we are, to be ready for anything that might come our way that’s a tragedy or a tough situation. We rejoice and we come together in good times, and we come together in bad times and it’s that perseverance that we’ve been known for,” Tennant said.
Following the memorial unveiling, the historic Covered Bridge was also dedicated.
