Social Media Aids First Responders Through Massive Storm in January

Officials with MECCA 911 in Monongalia County say social media played a role in their operations during a massive winter storm last month.

MECCA 911 reported snow totals that were the second-highest ever recorded in Monongalia County, but the county’s 911 director said calls declined considerably the weekend of the storm.

Director Mike Wolfe credits that to travel warnings and weather updates posted on sites like Facebook and Twitter. He said the public obeyed requests to stay off the roads.

“In general, I think that when you have that form of communication – open, accurate information and communication – it puts everyone a little more at ease, and then it allows things to go much more smoothly,” Wolfe said.

Wolfe added there’s no estimate yet on funds spent in the county during the storm.
