Webster Addison Pool Reopens After June Flood

The Webster Springs Pool in Webster County has been closed since the disastrous flood swept through in June. After a lot of hard work from volunteers, the pool reopened for one day of fun on Saturday.

“For a small town I didn’t think we would be able to swim again, which thanks to Don E. our mayor, thank God for him because he’s actually letting all the kids in Webster County swim free for one more day for the season,” said Noah Hamrick, of Webster Springs

Cole McCourt is the grandson of Mayor Don McCourt. He said for a man with cancer, he loves his community, doing everything he can nonstop to make sure the Bakers Island Recreational Area and pool gets back to what it once was before the flood.

“I hope I can work just as hard as him one day. He works just like I said nonstop on this place for all these kids here, to come here and have a good time,” said Cole McCourt, grandson of Mayor Don McCourt.

McCourt said his grandpa goes to treatments all day, and then comes home and gets right to work pitching in where help is needed.

“He is here almost every day, and when he is not we automatically know he has a doctor’s appointment or he has a treatment, because he’s down here. He’s really a hands-on mayor, he never asks for much from the people around him,” said Ryleigh McCoy, co-manager of the Webster Addison Pool.

“They’re putting all their hard work into it and trying to get the kids happy and having fun again,” said Paisley Hamrick, of Webster Springs.

The Webster Addison Pool still has a lot of water damage to the pool itself, and it loses on average about six inches of water a night due to cracks in the pool bottom. To get the pool back to what it was it would take approximately $150,000.

“I usually have 75 to 100 kids down here a day. I know that doesn’t seem like a lot, but for a small town like us it’s a lot and it’s nice to see all the kids getting out,” said McCoy.

Everyone is glad and thankful for all the volunteers countless hours, and the work that was put into being able to open the Webster Addison Pool for kids to have fun and relax, even if it is just for one day.
