A Fairview woman was arrested for not properly caring for horses on her property, according to the Marion County Sheriff’s Department.

Cathy Michael, 53, has been charged with five counts of felony cruelty to animals.

Deputies received reports about horses that were not being cared for on Jamison Road in Fairview. When deputies arrived on scene, they said they could tell the horses were not being fed properly because their bones were showing from their ribs to their back bones.

Deputies said the horses had been eating bark off the trees and had eaten all the grass in the field they were in.  The horses were also drinking dirty water that in the field because their water bucket was empty, deputies said.

Michael told deputies that it had been at least two weeks since any hay had been given to the horses, because she didn’t have the money to buy any.  Michael said she knew they weren’t looking too good and that it had been awhile since they had been to the veterinarian.

Michael has bonded out of jail.
