WVU Cheerleaders Visit VA Medical Center

The week of February 14th each year is an opportunity to say thank you to more than 98,000 veterans of the United States Armed Services who are cared for every day in V-A medical centers, outpatient clinics, and nursing homes.

All week the days of veterans have been brightened by visitors coming through the VA Medical Center in Clarksburg. This is National Salute to Veteran Patient Week.

The special week ended with WVU Cheerleaders visiting veterans in the community living center.

“For me personally, my grandfather was a veteran, so it’s really exciting for me to get to come and thank them for the sacrifices that they’ve made and just kind of brighten their days, give them something exciting to do. So I’m really excited to be here,” said Megan Vanmeter, WVU Cheerleader.

For the Clarksburg VA Medical Center, Salute to Veteran Patient Week began with elementary kids visiting the center. Since then, veteran service organizations, community organizations, and private individuals came in to say thank you to the veterans by bearing gifts and Valentine’s Day cards.

“I mean it’s always nice for the community to come in and interact with veterans that are hospitalized. Some of the veterans can’t get out, and they really do enjoy visits,” said Wesley Walls, public affairs specialist at Clarksburg VA Medical Center.

The week also provides an opportunity for the community to become acquainted with the volunteer opportunities within the medical center.

“Really the true meaning of this week is to promote volunteerism. We’re hoping that as groups come in here and spend time with veterans, that they’re able to step forward and spend some more time with us as a volunteer,” said Walls.

The veterans were lucky enough to get a preview of cheers cheerleaders perform at sporting events.

“It made my day, the West Virginia Cheerleaders. It really made my day, I’ll tell you,” said Dale Willard Matthews, veteran.
