Harley Benda joined 12 News in April 2021 as a Multimedia Journalist. Just five months later, she became a fill-in and weekend anchor while continuing her storytelling. She worked her way up to be the morning co-anchor of 12 News Today in July 2022. She alternates anchoring 12 News at 12 with Justin McLennan.
Harley is from Saint Clairsville, Ohio, a city 20 minutes west of Wheeling. She graduated from West Virginia University (Let’s Go, Mountaineers!) in 2020 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Journalism with an emphasis in television journalism, and a minor in Interactive Design for Media. During her time in college, she helped cover high school sports in Morgantown and the COVID-19 pandemic as it impacted her last semester-and-a-half in Morgantown. She also had the chance to learn how to create media for augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), as well as create a West Virginia-themed video game and code her own website from scratch thanks to her minor.
Before joining 12 News, she worked as a freelance reporter and intern for The Dominion Post newspaper in Morgantown. Harley was also an assistant producer and one-time host for Morgantown Today, a public affairs show from WVU’s Reed College of Media.
When Harley’s not at work, she can be found playing with her two dogs, Onyx and Jade, cheering on the Mountaineers and the Pittsburgh Penguins, or adding new additions to the gaming desktop computer she built herself.
Harley is always happy to take story ideas from anywhere in north central West Virginia! You can email them to her at HBenda@wboy.com.
