UPDATE: Deputies recover body in Cheat Lake after reported drowning

UPDATE (5/22/18 at 4 p.m.): 

A man’s body was found in Cheat Lake Monday afternoon, according to the Preston County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said they believe the body belongs to Michael Lewis, 23, of Petersburg, Ohio.

The Preston County Sheriff’s Office began searching Cheat River Sunday for a missing Ohio man. 

Michael Lewis, 23, of Petersburg, Ohio, was swept away by the the river’s swift current Sunday at about 4:21 a.m. in Preston County, deputies said. 

Shane Forame, 23, of Petersburg, Ohio, was with Lewis when he became stranded in the water, deputies said. 

Deputies were able to rescue Forame by rope, with the assistance of Aaron Williams, of Petersburg, Ohio.

Deputies will continue to search for Lewis with the help of volunteer fire departments from Masontown, Reedsville and Newburg, along with Kamp Ambulance, West Virginia State Police, Mountaineer Area Rescue Group, Preston County Dive Team and Grafton Volunteer K-9 Unit.
