Residents in Barbour County have a basket full of food, toys, and household items to be thankful for this holiday season.
Heart & Hands House of Barbour County provided 250 baskets for lower-income families in the community, and officials say the annual event is a great way to take a little stress off families during the holidays.
“There’s things that they wouldn’t have that they are having. I get many, many, many thank you’s, and people are just very grateful. That makes it a 360-degree thing because I’m grateful to be here,” said volunteer Edward Law.
Each year, volunteers and coordinators open the event to a line of expectant residents and work to fulfill a need just in time for Christmas.
“There’s a lot of need, and there’s a lot of people that are struggling in our county. We’re just glad we have a lot of donors and folks that support us and give things for this. We’re just glad that people care enough that they want to help their neighbors,” said Heart and Hand House Executive Director Brenda Hunt.
More than half of the baskets were handed out during the first day of the annual event. Officials said the baskets reach more than 500 community members during the holiday season.
