Two people were arrested in Randolph County for allegedly neglecting several animals.

Kimberly Sponaugle, 21, and her grandfather, Charles Shaffer, 80, are each charged with one count of cruelty to animals.

Deputies went to an animal hospital after a report of animal cruelty was received and found a dog with injuries, including a cut that had maggots inside and a tail that needed amputated.

Sponaugle, who had taken the dog to the hospital, told deputies she only cares for the dog occasionally and that it lives with Shaffer.

Deputies said they, then, seized several dogs that were living in poor conditions after responding to Shaffer’s residence. Shaffer told deputies that Sponaugle is responsible for caring for the animals.

Deputies decided to charge both Sponaugle and Shaffer with cruelty to animals.
