A Philippi man was arrested for fleeing from police in November 2018.
Officers with the Philippi Police Department said that on November 21, 2018 at 7:54 p.m. they witnessed a silver Mitsubishi Eclipse Spider traveling north on Route 19 in Philippi with no functioning license plates lights.
Officers said they began to follow the vehicle onto the Blue and Grey Expressway, and upon reaching the Chestnut Street intersection, they attempted to perform a traffic stop on the vehicle. According to police, as soon as officers turned on their emergency lights and sirens, the vehicle began to flee west on Chestnut Street and onto Union Road.
Officers said that the driver, who was later identified as Daniel Johnson, 34, of Philippi, lost control of his vehicle during a right turn just before Oakview Lane, and the vehicle came to a brief stop facing east in the westbound lane.
According to police, Johnson then began to flee in his vehicle again and began traveling east on Union Road towards Philippi. Officers said they briefly lost sight of Johnson’s vehicle, before regaining sight of it on a straightaway approximately a quarter mile from World Vision on Chestnut Street. Officers continued to pursue Johnson’s vehicle until it lost control and went over an embankment on the right side of the roadway just before Switzer Drive.
Officers said that Johnson then exited the vehicle and began to flee on foot east through a wooded area back towards Philippi. Officers began to pursue Johnson on foot until losing sight of him in a heavily wooded area.
Officers then returned to Johnson’s vehicle and spoke to the passenger of the vehicle, who identified the driver as Daniel Johnson to police.
Johnson was arrested on Thursday, January 24 and charged with fleeing in a vehicle with reckless indifference.
